The Loss of US and U.S.S. Liberty

by Ludwig Watzal

Israel and the US Empire are supposedly best friends, although the history between the two nations tells a different story. Having read the book „The Passionate Attachment. America’s Involvement with Israel, 1947 to the Present“ (1992), the jabberwocky of politicians about the relationship between Israel and the United States of America as an „ironclad“ one seems hypocritical. Either the US American politicians are politically naive to believe in their own rhetoric or they want to lead their own people purposely astray in order to cover up and protect a state that has been behaving like a rogue since the occupation of Palestine in 1967.

George W. Ball and Douglas B. Ball documented that the different US administrations bowed to Israeli and the US Zionist lobby’s pressure, although they had international law and US judiciary on their side. The costs for Israel’s support has not only been financially but also politically and morally. The US has failed „to halt Israel’s colonization“ of the occupied territories, write the Balls. To get things done in the Middle East, the authors call for an end to America’s „unquestioned acquiescence in Israeli action and a broadened role for collective security“.

How submissive the US behaves towards Israel can be demonstrated at best by the attack on the USS Liberty. US President Lyndon Johnson even swallowed the destruction of the reconnaissance ship USS Liberty during the Six-Day war of 1967 by the Israeli air force. 34 soldiers were killed and 172 were wounded. The Johnson administration swept all the evidence of a willful Israeli attack under the rug and accepted an Israeli „apology“; both governments called it „A case of mistaken identity.“(!) Up to this day, the clearance has been prevented by the US administrations. It seems as if war crimes are only investigated when it suits the US Empire and its client state.

The US policymakers are fully aware of their subservient role in relation to Israel. Former Secretary of State James Baker once called the US Senate „The Little Knesset“. And the late Senator James Fulbright said on July 10, 1973 on CBS‘ „Face the nation“: „The Israelis control the policy in the Congress and the Senate.“ No less a figure than Ariel Sharon shouted at Shimon Peres on October 3, 2001: „Every time we do something you tell me Americans will do this and will do that. I want to tell you something very clear, don’t worry about American pressure on Israel. We, the Jewish people, control America, and the Americans know it.“John J. Mearsheimer and Stephen M. Walt showed in their book „The Israel Lobby and US Foreign Policy“ that Israel is a liability to the US interest in the Middle East. The balance of power between the US and Israel is actually reflected in the fact that Benyamin Netanyahu can ridicule US President Obama time and again, and Obama grins and bears it.

As long as the circumstances of the attack on the USS Liberty are not clarified, the US freedom of action in the Middle East remains questionable. US Liberty and USS Liberty are two sides of the same coin. For a better understanding, watch this video.
