Torture and other forms of abuse reflect the worst of occupation harshness.

Palestinians want them ended. On Wednesday, PLO officials submitted draft Security Council text language. Jointly with Jordan Detailing terms for peace. Setting a 12-month deadline. December 2017 for ending Israel’s occupation. Saying they’re open to negotiations on text language. Palestinian UN envoy Riyad Mansour thanking Arab and European nations for helping. Antwort auf einen Essay von Wolf Biermann im Spiegel

Sehr geehrter Herr Biermann,

ich kenne Sie persönlich nicht, aber ich habe viele Ihrer Lieder, Gedichte und Essays gelesen und hatte deshalb den Eindruck, dass Sie ein idealistischer Pragmatiker sind oder ein pragmatischer Idealist. Ich habe Sie immer respektiert für ihren Kampf um Anständigkeit in der Politik, für ihren Einsatz für Schwächere und Benachteiligte und wegen Ihres Talents, politische und gesellschaftliche Heuchelei zu demaskieren und solche Zeitfiguren nackt darzustellen. Ich war nie ein Fan von Ihnen, aber Sie hatten immer meinen Respekt und Achtung. Natürlich habe ich Sie auch um Ihr Talent so gut und leicht schreiben zu können, beneidet. Deshalb bitte ich schon jetzt um Nachsicht, dass meine Sprache nicht so brillant, witzig und scharf ist, wie die Ihre. Ich hoffe dennoch, dass Sie meine Worte verstehen und mein Anliegen nicht verachten werden.

Ihr Essay in der letzten Ausgabe des Spiegels hat mich überrascht und enttäuscht. Ich habe eine solche zynische Einseitigkeit nicht erwartet, wobei mich weniger die Einseitigkeit als vielmehr der Zynismus gestört hat. Ich habe Sie offensichtlich falsch eingeschätzt, dass Sie immer die Partei der Schwachen und Verfolgten, die Partei der Opfer verteidigen. Sie haben sich jetzt auf die Seite von Ralph Giordano geschlagen, der darüber schreibt, dass in Deutschland ein Gespenst umgeht, das Gespenst des Antisemitismus, und damit nur billige und primitive Hetze betreibt. Auch Sie wollen uns jetzt Ihre Meinung aufdrängen, zu einem Konflikt, von dem Sie nicht nur den Weg zum Frieden nicht kennen, sondern von dem Sie offensichtlich auch sonst nicht viel wissen. Sie haben uns noch gefehlt in der Liste der vielen Politiker, Künstler und Autoren, die es gut meinen mit Israel, obwohl Israelis wie z. B. Uri Avnery oder Felicia Langer oder ihr Freund Amos Oz oft genug davor gewarnt haben, Israel mit besonderen Maßstäben zu messen. Die Überzeugung von der Allgegenwärtigkeit und Ewigkeit des Antisemitismus ist offensichtlich auch bei Ihnen, wie bei der ganzen zionistischen Bewegung, ein ideologischer Bestandteil ihres Denkens geworden.  Weiterlesen →

Suddenly there is a possibility of changing the government in Israel, and the excitement is great. Indeed, the thought of a government led by Isaac Herzog and Tzipi Livni sets the imagination on fire: the end of anti-democratic legislation, a brief pause in the ongoing process of pushing aside Israeli Arabs, a breakwater to the waves of racism and ultranationalism, of persecution, incitement and division; the restoration of the High Court of Justice to its rightful place, the renewal of the peace talks, the weakening of the right-wing thugs in the Knesset, perhaps even the closure of the Holot immigrant detention center.

Something good seems to be in the air, a spirit of a different time, spreading hope. The wider world, too, will cheer and embrace the new Israel, in the event. Every proponent of democracy should rejoice at its approach.  Weiterlesen →

Am  27. Februar 1981 hat sich Henryk M. Broder mit einem Paukenschlag von seinen „linken Freunden“ durch einen ganzseitigen Artikel in der Wochenzeitung „DIE ZEIT“ verabschiedet. Er schrieb „meine mehr oder weniger lieben linken Freunde!“ Ob er allerdings selber je links war und ob er tatsächlich linke Freunde hatte, bleibt unklar und ist eher zweifelhaft. Sein Abschiedsbrief wird als ein Dokument des „Zorns und der Resignation“ vorgestellt und ist eher ein Dokument der Verzweiflung und Frustration. Darin wirft er allen Linken vor, sie blieben „die Kinder ihrer Eltern“ so sehr sie sich auch von ihnen distanzieren wollten. Als ob er nicht das Kind seiner Eltern sei. Erstaunlich ist auch, mit welcher Leichtigkeit er eine ganze Generation verurteilt.

Er beruft sich bei dieser gewaltigen Anklage auf zwei oder drei Fallbeispiele, die weder repräsentativ noch besonders überzeugend sind. Er wirft den Linken „Antisemitismus“ vor und benutzt schon damals dieselben Methoden wie heute. Kritik an Israel ist Antisemitismus und Zweifel an Auschwitz sowieso.

In seinem ersten Beispiel führt er eine junge, 30 Jahre alte Lehrerin vor, die wohl an derselben Gehirnwäsche litt, die sie von kommunistischen Gehirnwäschern bekam, an der heute junge zionistische Menschen leiden. Diese junge Lehrerin wagte zu behaupten, dass die KZs in erster Linie Arbeitslager waren, wo Rüstungsgüter billig hergestellt wurden und „erst gegen Ende des Krieges, als die Niederlage absehbar war, fingen die Nazis mit der Vernichtung der Juden an“. Ob das stimmt oder nur teilweise stimmt, ist doch vollkommen irrelevant. Aber aus demjenigen, der das behauptet, gleich einen Antisemiten zu machen, ist absurd und falsch. Und weiter beschuldigt Broder die junge Lehrerin, behauptet zu haben, dass „der Holocaust als zionistische Propaganda benutzt wird, um die Existenz des Staates Israel zu rechtfertigen“. Ist es etwa nicht wahr? Das behaupten heute auch viele Juden und Broder selbst hat es eine Zeitlang behauptet, als er seine These vom „Shoahbusiness“ aufstellte. Broder hat dafür sogar noch Geld bekommen, während die junge Frau von 1981 das aus purer Überzeugung sagte. Und was, wenn es falsch wäre? Dann hätte sie eine falsche Überzeugung gehabt. There is approximately one bright side to the current Israeli approach to the Palestinians – and it is that satirists will never want for inspiration.

Israel’s latest contribution to global absurdity is an “anti-terror” law proposed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party and targeting Palestinian citizens of Israel and residents of the West Bank and Jerusalem. If passed, it will criminaliseholding a Palestinian flag at demonstrations.

A host of other measures are also prescribed. According to the summary of the bill on Israel’s Ynetnews website, these include the following:

• “Those killed during their attempt to conduct a terror attack will not receive a funeral” (their bodies will instead “be buried in an unknown location;”)
• “Terrorists’ houses will be destroyed within 24-hours [sic] of the attack;”
• “Families of terrorists will lose their citizenship and will be deported to Gaza should they express support for their relative’s deed.”

Ynetnews goes on to note that, in view of the bill’s drafters, terroristic “[s]upport… can be expressed through public or social media.”

A summary from The Washington Post additionally specifies that persons “convicted of throwing Molotov cocktails or fireworks” would also be eligible for deportation following completion of their prison sentence.  Weiterlesen →

I arrived in Germany formally invited by members of a political party to speak about my reporting during the Gaza war. I left the country branded an anti-Semite and an insane scofflaw. With machine-like efficiency, German media cast me and my Jewish Israeli journalist colleague, David Sheen, as violent Jew haters, never veering from the script written for them by a strange American neoconservative working for an organization subsidized by far-right-wing casino mogul Sheldon Adelson, nor bothering to ask either of us for comment. Slandered as anti-Semites, we sought to meet with the left-wing politician who felt compelled to engineer the campaign to suppress our speech: Die Linke party chairman Gregor Gysi.

When Gysi refused to speak to us, we followed him as he ran from his office. The videotaped incident ended at a door outside what turned out to be a bathroom, sparking a scandal known as “Toilettengate.” We had violated the unwritten rules of a dour political culture where conflict normally takes the form of carefully composed pronouncements delivered through proper bureaucratic channels. Die Linke’s position on Palestine has isolated it from the global solidarity movement and strengthened the party’s worst elements.

It was a truly bizarre scene, worthy of a Peter Sellers film: a man frantically running through the Bundestag’s lifeless corridors. Behind him, another man, David Sheen, accuses him of smears and putting his life in danger from Israeli right-wing thugs. The man is Gregor Gysi, head of the Left Party’s (Die Linke) parliamentary caucus. He walks to a bathroom and closes the door shouting to Sheen “Raus mit dir!” (“Out with you!”).

Annette Groth and Inge Höger, two Die Linke parliamentarians who were aboard the 2010 Free Gaza Flotilla, try to calm Sheen and his associate, Max Blumenthal.

What exactly happened?

It seems that Gysi went out of his way to cancel an event with Blumenthal and Sheen scheduled to take place at Die Linke’s premises in the Bundestag. Another party MP, Petra Pau, co-signed a letter along with a politician from the Green Party and a Social Democrat heading the main Israel lobbying organization in Germany, urging the Volksbühne Theatre to cancel an event with Blumenthal and Sheen scheduled for November 9.

The letter claimed Blumenthal and Sheen were a “one-sided duet” who compare Israel to Nazis, and who had the nerve to stage an anti-Israel event on the anniversary of Kristallnacht.  Weiterlesen →
